Just a few minutes down the road from the House of Flags Museum, is the Polk County History Museum in Columbus, NC. Admission is free. Displays and artifacts of the local area, date back as far as the 1800's. Staff is very friendly and informative. Check their website, as open days and hours are limited.

The Polk County Historical Association works to preserve the history of Polk County in western North Carolina, including Tryon, Saluda, and Columbus. The Polk County History Museum, located in downtown Columbus, is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
