Desert Life

If you have never visited or lived in the desert, life is different here.
From the weather to creatures that live in the desert.

HEAT:
If you are here during the months of May- October, there will days where the temperature may reach or surpass 100 degrees.
You need to drink plenty of water.
It is dangerous to hike or walk when the temperature is above 100 degrees.
Don’t go for long treks.
Make sure someone knows where you went.
Several tourists have died from heat exposure because they were not prepared.
Spring and fall (and sometimes winter) are the best times to go hiking.
We are usually very dry so make sure you’re drinking plenty of water.

CREATURES:

📷Rattlesnakes- if you see one call immediately so we can move it.

Snakes- most snakes are harmless and will go on their way.
If it’s a problem please call us so we can move it if needed.
They are helpful in keeping our packrat population down.

📷Packrats-
You probably won’t see them but you’ll see their nests.
If you see a pile of seed pods, cactus, fluff, chewed wood- Let us know so we can get rid of them.

Scorpions-
We haven’t had any for awhile.

📷

Bobcats

📷

May look very cute but do not get close.
Just move inside and they will go away.
Do not throw anything at them or feed them.
It’s very rare to even see them.

Coyotes

📷You’ll often see coyotes crossing the road and you’ll hear them in the wash but they’re good at hiding.
They won’t bother you.

📷Javelina- are stinky.
You can smell them from far away.
They like to eat our plants in the front of the house, knock over our trash cans.
We try to keep it javelin proof.
Make sure the trash cans are tied up so they can get into them and there is no trash or food out front.
Do NOT leave trash bags out front.
Do not let your dogs near them.
They can get vicious so don’t get near.
If you come home and they are there- honking your horn will scare them away.

Hawks and owls- are frequent visitors because of the wash.
They hunt there all the time.
That being said anyone with small dogs need to be aware of that danger.

CACTUS

We’ve tried to get most of the cactus out of our yard but some just sprout back up.
The cholla is the really bad one to watch out for because it will stick to you.
Do not walk outside barefoot and watch where you step.

📷

Keep children away from the barrel cactus and saguaros (pronounced- sa-wa-ros).
The spines are super dangerous and could lead to a trip to the emergency room.
