There are 3 direct vent heaters in the cottage that are the primary source of heat. The 3 wall A/C units are also heating units and can be used to supplement the propane-based heaters if necessary
Each of the 3 wall units has its own control located in the room that the unit controls.
These units do most of their work during the summer, keeping the house cool. Each can be operated independently and adjusted for the needs of the room. Closing doors between rooms will also allow for better conservation.
Using the Air Conditioners to Cool
It's extremely important that you follow these rules when using these A/C units to cool:
- Please be sure that the unit is set to "Cool" and not "Heat" or "Auto". If you set to "Auto", the heat may start working in the summer time!
- Use the up/down arrows to set the desired room temperature.
- If you don't see the word "Hold" on the display, press the "Hold" button until it is displayed. This keeps the temperature that you set.
- Please use shades, curtains and doors to keep the rooms cool. Drawing the shades and curtains in the late afternoon will keep the hot sun from burning into the house. Closing doors will allow you to maintain cooler temps in the rooms with activity while the rooms with no activity stay a little warmer.
- Please do not leave windows and exterior doors open anywhere in the house if any A/C unit or the heat is running. We've learned that we are not capable of changing the temperature outdoors this way, so please don't try.
Ceiling Fans
The first floor ceiling fans have wall switches to power them. Use the hanging pull cords on the fans to change between off, slow, medium and fast speeds. The fans should be set to blow air down in the summer, keeping you cooler.
Although the master bedroom fan over the bed has a slider adjacent to the wall switch to control the speed of the fan, it's best that the slider remain at the top for full speed.
Direct Vent Heaters
The direct vent heaters are located in the Great Room, the entrance/laundry and the master bedroom. Please set units to use Economy mode.
As when running the Air Conditioning, all windows and exterior doors should be shut when running the heaters.
Free-Standing Fans
There is a box fan and a small table fan stored in the first floor bedroom closet.
