Austin is, of course, famous for it's barbecue. From Franklin's BBQ ushering Obama to the front of the line (but not Kanye West), to classics like the Salt Lick in Dripping Springs, there is no shortage of choices. However, not all barbecue is created equal. Here are our favorites:
- La Barbecue. Best brisket around (and I'm a brisket girl). There is always a line, but at least they have a brick-and-mortar store now. https://www.labarbecue.com/
- Stiles Switch. A bit closer to home for me - actually, right around the corner - Style Switch is really excellent, from sausage to ribs. It also has enough delicious, hearty sides to keep any vegetarians you're dragging to a barbecue place from feeling left out. http://www.stilesswitchbbq.com/
- Franklin BBQ. OK, full confession - I've never been to Franklins. I'm not willing to wait in a line for hours. However, it's an experience, and the barbecue is (apparently) truly excellent. https://franklinbbq.com/
- Salt Lick. This one is a bit of a hike, out in Hill Country. But you're rewarded with a beautiful drive and a great setting to eat your barbecue. Salt Lick is BYOB and you'll see lots of people coming in with coolers. Live music on weekends. The barbecue is - in my opinion - not the best, but it's definitely set off by the Texas ambience.
- County Line. This is another ambience place. The barbecue is fine, but you're really there for the beautiful settings (different at each location).
