Things to See & Do in Quinta do Anjo

Grutas da Quinta do Anjo ou Grutas do Casal do Pardo/ Caves of Quinta do Anjo or Caves of Casal do Pardo

The funerary monument known as Grutas Artificiais da Quinta do Anjo / Artificial Caves of Quinta do Anjo were identified in the last quarter of the nineteenth century during limestone extraction on the site, this action caused the partial destruction of the necropolis with larger incision in the caves 3 & 4.
The archaeological excavations were made in 1876 by António Mendes under the guidance of Carlos Ribeiro, although it is believed that may have existed earlier. In 1906 Antonio L. Marques da Costa finished the excavations & since then the monuments have been studied by many Portuguese & foreign researchers.

Most notable is the publication made in 1965 of the exhaustive catalogue of material found on this necropolis by the German archaeologist Vera Leisner. In 1934 these caves were classified as a National Monument of Portugal April 5, 1934.

Caves 1 & 2 are in excellent condition, unfortunately the other two are nearly all destroyed over the years.

LIMA FORTUNA

Duarte Fortuna & Sofia Lima Fortuna, son & granddaughter of Emídio, founded Lima Fortuna with the mission to recover Arrabidine – the Secret of Arrábida’s Monks, for being an exceptional & surprising digestive beverage.

Being in the same family for three generations it was important to keep up traditions & the most important factor was to keep the Secret of Arrábida’s Monks alive, improving it & making it even greater, in order to be tasted as a true experience.

So in 2012 Lima Fortuna was founded aimed at the recovery of Arrabidine – the Secret of the Arrábida’s Monks & the House of Arrabidine, where it is now produced.

Also exploring traditional processes, which were born with the recovery of Arrabidine, plus with the thought of going further & recovering more family recipes as well as investing in the field of spirits

THE HOUSE OF ARRABIDINE

The building is an old olive press, built by the friars of the Order of Santiago, of the Palmela Castle, at the end of the XVII century. It was restored in 2012 under the Leader project “Arrabidine – the mythical liqueur of Arrábida” a community initiative promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Sea, Environment & Regional Planning & co-financed by the EAFRD.

When the time came to decide where Arrabidine would continue to be produced, & entirely in the traditional way, in view of such heritage & with so much history to tell, Sofia decided to transform the old olive press into a new cellar, keeping the structure & the original architectural design of the building.

They are proud of being the House of Arrabidine, the only company producing the liqueur, entirely the traditional way, according to the original recipe and owner of its registered trademark.

THE CELLAR

For storage & ageing, is the cellar is excellent. The architecture of the building naturally favours the storing & conservation of the spirituous beverages in the vats, barrels & bottles that rest there.

In there, one can find the original vats, where Arrabidine rests before being bottled. The existing underground reservoirs, used to store olives while at the olive press, also works as an ageing cellar for some bottles of Arrabidine, which will only be marketed several years after being bottled.

THE PRODUCTION

Their production is artisanal, traditional. The whole process leads them to put into every bottle a good dose of dedication, respecting the recipes & adding value to an industry that is being reborn in the XXI century.

The technology used serves the purpose of the unarguable quality of products, established by the analysis & tasting done by some big connoisseurs, their liqueurs & spirituous beverages are analysed by an oenologist before being distributed.

THE SHOP

The Cellar Shop, in addition to having products for sale, acts as a platform for homemade gastronomic products & for products from Quinta do Anjo. The selection of the products relies on the knowledge of the product & its manufacturing process, which enables visitors to have great experience.
