Convenience > Layovers
While no one likes a layover, we’ll make the case for why we think that flying into the Tucson International Airport (TUS) is a WAY better option than flying direct into Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX). We have only 23 direct flights into TUS, and none if you’re coming from the east coast. But our little airport is WAY more convenient and less crowded - making travel easier and less stressful.
Here’s a few of the reasons we love flying through TUS:
Similar flight prices
Prices are very competitive between TUS and PHX - so much so that it will likely cost you more in gas and time to drive from PHX to Tucson! While we’ve sometimes found that flights are cheaper out of PHX, the difference is negligible when you factor in time spent driving and dealing with their rental car situation (more on that in a bit!).
Easy to navigate
Three terminals that are all fully walkable and no need for moving sidewalks means it’s easy to find your terminal and gate.
Efficient security lines
A smaller airport means less people, which also means shorter security lines. Pro tip: Get TSA Pre Check for a super fast security experience. Plus, you don’t have to pull out your laptop or liquids, or take off shoes. It makes travel SO much less stressful and saves time!
Local restaurants
You’ll find a great assortment of local restaurants if you want to enjoy a quick meal or drink in the airport. Check out a few of our faves: Sir Vezas, Beyond Bread, Barrio Brewing and El Charro.
Quick arrival of checked bags
We’re not sure how they move so quickly, but by the time you get off the plane, stop for a bathroom break and walk to the baggage claim, you’ll hear the buzzer going off, the belt starts moving and your bag arrives in minutes. It’s one of the most efficient experiences we’ve ever had when checking bags!
Rental car
If you’ve ever rented a car at PHX, you know it’s a maddening experience. Once you’ve picked up your checked bags, you have to take a shuttle to the offsite rental center. We’ve had guests who have waited in line for over an hour before getting their car. In contrast, at TUS it’s a brisk stroll past baggage claim to the rental car center. You’ll be in your rental car before you can say, ‘giddyup!’
Wheels down to arrival time
Flying into TUS means it’s only a 30-40 minute drive to Oro Valley and Catalina Foothills, which is much shorter than the 1:45 to 2 hour drive from PHX. When you factor the time saved at the rental car, it negates any time savings of flying direct.
No stress about I-10
The interstate between Phoenix and Tucson can get busy if you’re driving during peak commute times. There are sections of I-10 that only have 2 lanes each way, so if there’s an accident and the interstate is blocked, it could mean you need to take the longer route of Highway 87 or you could miss your flight. While these events are uncommon, when they do happen it’s a sad and frustrating experience for all.
Support small!
More folks flying through TUS means that airlines will see the demand and continue to increase the number of direct flights available. By utilizing our ‘lil airport you’re helping to make the future of flying better for our entire community!
We’re all for less stress and easier travel, so we feel thankful to have such an awesome little airport for our growing city!
