Travelers have been staying in vacation homes for centuries, but it wasn't until the emergence and disruption of VRBO.com and Airbnb that the industry became a mainstream lodging alternative. According to Phocuswright, 32 percent of U.S. travelers reported staying in a private home in 2015, up from 8 percent in 2010.
