From my understanding is if someone clicks on my link and wants to view my calendar, before they can see any dates they are required to create and account?

This is not correct - Anyone on Houfy can view availability/calendar. Guests are not required to create an account.

However: Guests are required to create an account to use the Houfy message system. To contact the owner directly, outside Houfy, guests can click on the owner/mgr profile picture to view the contact information if available.
