  1. Lowcountry Celebration Park/Adventure Playground

I wrote a little about this playground in the article “
10 things to do on Hilton Head island with kids.” One thing I really love about HHI is how the city embraces the local history. I’ve heard the schools teach about the local Gullah people and their basketmaking crafts, another other of their skills. Not only does this park have a “ship” themed playground, it is named after Captain WIlliam Hilton sailed from Barbado on a ship named The Adventure. The whole park area has the “Hilton Head” feel with trees, walking paths, bike parking, and educational signs throughout.

  1. Coligny Plaza’s Playground

The shops at Coligny Plaza have a nice little playground that’s shaped as a ship too. It gets crowded during the evenings when people are shopping, but it is usually nice in the mornings when the shops open and in the afternoons.

  1. Gregg Russell Harbour Town Playground

📷

Do you know the amazing
Gregg Russell? He is an extremely talented musician and songwriter who lives on the island with his wife. He has the ability to make people laugh and entertain through his singer/songwriting talent. There is a live oak tree at Harbour Town in Sea Pines that is beautiful and majestic. It is right by the marina and has benches around it. For over 40 seasons, Gregg Russell has performed cute kids songs with hand motions and performed for the deep crowd with just his guitar and a microphone. Kids are invited to sit on stage to engage in the performance. He calls on them and helps adults remember children are a special gift by sharing the microphone. They make poster board signs and hold them high and laugh and sing deep into the night. The sky gets dark as the lights in the tree get bright. The warm wind blows and the lighthouse glows in the background. Get a taste of the magic here

Kids and parents both enjoy the Bubble Gum Cruise the Gregg and his friend Randy host. Families take a 90-minute tour of the sound to see dolphins and wildlife. The cost is $25/adult and $20/kid.

He is changing the world through laughter and the organization he founded in 1998 called Hilton Head Heroes and Lids for Kids, the program distributed over 1,000 baseball hats to children that had experienced chemotherapy treatments.
https://hhheroes.com/. The mission is to bring families with children between the ages of four and eighteen suffering from life threatening illnesses to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina for a resort vacation. Children are referred to our program through doctors, healthcare providers and hospital administrators. The families are housed in the Hilton Head HERO house located in Sea Pines Resort. They are given gift certificates to local restaurants, grocery stores as well as island amenities. He has made a video message with one of his songs about HHI here

  1. Shelter Cove Playground

Looking for a nice place to take a stroll and let the kids burn some energy? Shelter Cove playground and community park offers a boardwalk with observation deck, a relaxing fountain, a shaded area for meetings, wi-fi, and nice restrooms. The area offers lots of free parking and within walking distance to shops.

  1. Green Shell Park

Green Shell Park is similar to Chaplin. It is run by the city and doesn’t offer beach access, but does have historic markers, an observation deck, a basketball court, and a small playground. If crowded tourist play areas are not your thing, this place is perfect for you.

  1. Jarvis Creek Park

Jarvis Creek Park has a fishing dock, fitness and hiking trail, picnic pavilion, and a cute playground. I love that you can sit on the porch swing and look at the grasslands.

  1. Honorable Mention – Honey Horn

While they do not have a playground, Honey Horn is a very magical place. The Coastal Discovery Museum operates here, but you can also just come and walk down the paths. They go deep behind the museum into surrounding marshlands. Live oaks with Spanish moss cover the grounds making great places to picnic. On Tuesdays during season the Farmers Market sets up offering local honey and lots of tasty treats.

Of course, you can bump up the quality of a park by bringing your own items! Depending on the ages of your kids, some good items would be sidewalk chalk, hula hoops, bubbles, jump ropes, and bikes, scooters, or roller skates. Older children might enjoy some of these as well. Geocaching is a really fun activity with a treasure hunt feel! If you want to see the whole more, this map is awesome for showing all the local parks and facilities.
