Shenandoah Road, Plymouth
The winemaking industry in Amador County dates all the way back to the gold rush, as fever dreams of riches beckoned not only prospectors but people from all walks of life and all skillsets to the Sierra Nevada foothills. Within a few decades, there were over 100 wineries in the area known as the Mother Lode, more than any other region of California (source: Amador County Vintners Association).
Though the original wine industry faded away with the gold, these early pioneers knew then what the current generation of winemakers discovered anew over 100 years later in the Shenandoah Valley: rolling, sun-drenched hillsides, warm daytime temperatures, and volcanic, decomposed granite soils provide ideal conditions for producing top-quality wine grapes. Today, approximately 40 area wineries produce robust, delicious award-winning wines in the Shenandoah Valley and Fiddletown appellations.
Amador County is known for its richly flavored reds, like Zinfandel, Barbera, and Sangiovese. These grapes thrive in our hot summer days and warm nights. Zin not your thing? You'll find a wide array of other varietals as well as delicious blends. Come try them for yourself!
The vast majority of tasting rooms are concentrated in the Shenandoah Valley (vineyard views) along Shenandoah Road, with a smaller selection on Main Street in charming Sutter Creek. The vibe here is relaxed, rustic and fun - never stuffy. Wine-related events occur year round, so check the Amador Vintners website to help plan your tasting itinerary. And remember, Gold Creek Cabin is just 30 minutes from the Shenandoah Valley, which makes a perfect home base for a weekend wine tasting getaway!
