Tale of the Whale is located on the Manteo Causeway between the Outer Banks and Roanoke Island. It is 4.5 miles from Summer Shanty and takes approximately 9 mins. to get there. I love the fact that it is so close.
They tout ”Upscale dining overlooking the Roanoke Sound.” This restaurant has breath-taking views of the sound and in certain rooms of the restaurant, you have panoramic views over the water.
It is upscale, while still being family-friendly. It is a local family-owned restaurant and they take great pride in their food and service. We found every meal to be delicious.
If you don’t mind eating early, we suggest going during their first hour being open, which is 4PM during the summer season June 1 - August 31. During the first hour, they have a 20% off deal, which is worth it. If you have to wait to be seated, that is fine, they will honor the 20% off as long as you are there within that first hour.
They do not take reservations, but they do like you to call if you have a large party, so they can plan for it. There are sometimes long waits because of its popularity, but they have a few places to lounge before dinner. There is a small bar just beyond the hostess station where you can order drinks or food. There is a gazebo that is out over the water, which is beautiful.
