A (nearly) perfect family day in Cape May County
Cape May County Park and Zoo
707 Route 9 North - Cape May Court House, NJ 08210 https://www.cmczoo.com/
This a nice zoo, but it is also just the right size, a great visit for all ages, and it is completely FREE. Did you get that? Completely free.
Picnic facilities, playgrounds, shops, and a zoo. You can spend an entire day here or just a couple of hours. It is certainly great for families, but we enjoy a stroll just as a couple, or with our adult children as well.
A few items of note for visitors:
- It can get REALLY crowded in the summer months. We recommend this spot for spring, fall, and even winter, but found that in the midst of summer, this was a bit "too much" on a really hot day.
- If I were to offer any criticism, it is that some of the habitats are just too small for the animals they house. Some aren't even really "habitats" at all. Many of their animal residents have injuries that don't allow them to be released to their natural habitat, so this is a good option for them to still live a good life (they would not survive in the wild otherwise). But in the cases where the animals are not injured and protected, it did feel that the habitats for some of the animals were insufficient (too small or not "natural enough", We would wish for larger fenced areas and more "natural" habitats for a number of animals, as some looked bored and sad. You could see where some of the animals had worn tracks into the ground where they paced the perimeter. I wish for more for the big and small cats, the farm animals, and most reptiles that we saw. IMO, less can be more if you "do better" for mother nature's creatures.
Safe travels and may all creatures live their best life!
