May to October is the time for nesting and hatching. If you are lucky, you may witness one of these amazing events. Because of the current beach ordinances and recent conservation efforts, the turtle population is rising, and the chance of witnessing the laying or hatching of turtles has increased too.
So what can you do? Follow all the beach rules to make sure you are more friend than foe to these amazing visitors to the beach.
Leave No Trace
- Turn off unnecessary exterior lights to keep from confusing or frightening the turtles.
- Never leave chairs or tents on the beach overnight. The patrol will likely remove it anyway. You risk a fine from the patrol and a bill for replacement cost from the owners.
- Knock down any sandcastles and fill holes before you leave to avoid trapping turtles.
- Stay away from marked nests.
- Properly dispose of all food and trash.
- Report any "Leave No Trace" issue or infraction HERE.
To report someone disturbing a sea turtle nest or an injured, dead or harassed sea turtle call Wildlife Alert 888-404-FWCC (888-404-3922) or report it online. Cellular phone users can also call *FWC or #FWC, or send a text to Tip@MyFWC.com.
