We knew it was going to happen soon because this precious Laysan albatross chick was sooooooo ready. Pela (born January 30th, 2019) had been fed by both mom (Dora) and dad (Larry) last week so her tummy was plenty full.
It has been a month since I reported on Pela, "my" Laysan albatross chick in Princeville, Kauai. He/she is now ten weeks old and growing like crazy. I will not know his/her gender for awhile so until then I am choosing the "she" pronoun.
Of course he/she is "my" albatross chick because, after all, he/she was born on my birthday and I was lucky enough to get to name her. Pela means "soar" in Hawaiian and that is what he/she will do in about four months from now.
I've written thirteen blog posts about the Laysan Albatross at our Honu Point Vacation Rental on Kauai, but, by far, this is the one I am most excited about. I have always appreciated these graceful creatures but it was while building our vacation rental that I fell in love with them.
They're back! Each year Hob Osterlund, author of Holy Moli, Albatross and Other Ancestors, has a contest to guess when the first albatross will return to Kauai. This year one eager bird (not the one shown in the photo) was spotted at a Kilauea property on Thursday, November 8th!

With all of the media coverage of our flooding last week, some of you have expressed concern about the albatross chicks on Kaweonui Road. Rest assured, these little guys are doing just fine. Today was the first day in a long time that we had broad sunshine first thing in the morning.
For the fifth year in a row, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology has set up their "bird cam" on Kauai in order for the world to be able to watch the Laysan albatross nest and have their young live!
I can hardly wait for the Laysan albatross to arrive back on Kaweonui Road in Princeville. It should be any day now and it is SO exciting when the first one appears overhead. Every year since the late 70s the north and west shores of Kauai have been home to these amazing birds.
Meet Orion, an albatross chick born four houses down from Honu Point. He was born during the third week in January 2017 and has two very dedicated parents looking after him. He was about three weeks old when I took the top photo.
