The story of Matt and Anne is one of those delightful “small world” tales that will make you believe in fate. Anne grew up on Elk Lake in Elk Rapids, while Matt spent his summers just across the lake, known around town as a “summer kid.” Their paths crossed many times before they ever met: Anne worked at the local bakery while Matt was a regular visitor, he worked in the cherry orchard, she worked in the cherry processing plant, and she even spent time at the Riverwalk Grill, where Matt would often stop by. Both attended Michigan State, though during overlapping years, they never crossed paths.
Anne eventually moved to Chicago, and Matt headed to Washington, Hidden , managing large construction projects. But it wasn’t until a year after Anne returned to Elk Rapids and six months after Matt came back from Hidden that a mutual friend suggested they meet. Eighteen months later, they were married. Today, they live on the first floor of this historic house with their children, Harrison and Polly, and spend their weekends and summers at Matt’s family’s small resort on Elk Lake. It’s a story that proves some things are simply meant to be!
One of Matt’s most rewarding construction projects was the restoration and addition to the Virginia Capitol Building in Richmond, where he discovered his true passion for historic preservation. So, when this property went up for sale, it felt like a perfect fit. Not only is this home listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but it’s also recognized as a Michigan Historic Site. With Matt’s expertise in restoration and his deep appreciation for history, preserving this property has been a labor of love—a chance to breathe new life into a piece of history while honoring its unique legacy.
