Thank you for booking! We are so happy you chose our Happy Place as a place to vacation. This is a family cabin ran by a husband and wife and their 2 kids. We want it to feel like you're part of the family too.
I have included the house manual in this message for your review. If you are uncomfortable with or have any questions about the upcoming stay we're happy to answer them for you in advance to make sure we're the right fit as we want you to be satisfied with your stay. We know its going to be a cozy and relaxing time.
Your trip is almost here!
We are so excited to have you. Here are a few tips and tricks to know before your trip and while settling in.
We're your hosts, Keith and Ashlee. This is our family cabin where we make memories with our family and share it with your family to do the same. It's a cozy place with a lot of traditional cabin nostalgia. Please check out our Guidebook for a list of local places to visit during your stay.
Arriving:
The driveway fits up to 3 mid-sized vehicles. Larger vehicles may only fit 2 comfortably. While the driveway isn't steep, there is no turn around so it is recommended to back in to the spots to make for an easier exit. Please only park in these spaces as the other spots belong to the neighbors.
Door Lock:
Your host will provide you with a door code prior to check in. The lock is digital. To use the lock, press "YALE", type in the code and press the check mark and you should hear the door unlock.
Basement door code is 2016. This is where you'll find the laundry, cornhole boards and a few other supplies. This door expands and contracts with the weather. Please pull the door towards you while it is unlocking so the lock doesn't get stuck.
Utilities:
-Water- The cabin has a tankless water heater to accommodate showers for all. In the hallway there is a switch to turn the water heater on (looks just like a light switch).
-Central Heating/Air- Thermostat for heat and air is located in the downstairs bedroom hallway. Twain Harte can get very hot in the summer, if the AC is turned too low, the unit can freeze up requiring it to power down for several hours to defrost. To prevent having to do this we don't recommend the AC going below 74*
-Fireplace- Our fireplace is a convection fireplace and can truly heat the home with little fuel. On the coffee table in our home manual you will find some operating instructions with photos to assist. While we do provide wood, we do not have fool-proof dry storage for the wood. We recommend upon arrival bringing some wood inside onto the hearth to keep dry. If you're new to starting fires, we recommend purchasing some fire starter logs to make the process easier as you cannot use any accelerants to start the fire.
-Cooking- Our oven/stove are propane powered. Propane fires burn hotter than electric or natural gas. Keep this in mind so you can keep the heat lower than you're used to as to not burn your food. Please make sure the nobs are always turned to off when not using.
-Garbage disposal- We have one! But we do ask that large amounts of food be scraped into the trash. Especially in the colder months, putting too much food down the disposal can result in slow or backed up drains.
*This cabin does NOT have a dishwasher* For larger groups, or to not spend your trip doing dishes we do recommend disposable dinner wear.
Coffee:
We provide a drip coffee pot, filters and a canister of ground coffee.
Kitchen Amenities: Basic cooking supplies (pots, pans, knives, dishes, serving bowls) are provided. There is an electric kettle for hot water (switch is on the handle). There is also a blender. We provide salt and pepper only. However, we have a cabinet that typically has more spices/oil etc. These are considered "community use" items and are not maintained by the owners but are available for anyone to use if desired. The refrigerator does not have an ice maker. It does have plenty of plastic trays provided.
Technology:
Livingroom TV is equipped with a streaming device as well as Xfinity basic cable. You will find a few local channels with the cable. The Xfinity remote is for the cable, Roku remote for the streaming stick and a Samsung remote for the TV. There is also a DVD player. You may need to change the 'input' on the Samsung remote to switch between cable/roku/DVD. When switching through the inputs, give it a few seconds to load before moving through to the next input.
There are 2 other TVs in the bedrooms. These TVs do not have streaming devices nor are they connected to cable. They are however available for gaming consoles or if you bring other streaming sticks.
Kids Toys:
We have available upstairs many toys for young kids. Please be aware there may be small pieces to some of the toys so kids should be supervised at all times.
Backyard:
The backyard is fence but is not fool proof to keep curious kids from getting out. Please make sure that kids are supervised. There is a plastic castle play set in the back yard to play with and fun stumps to climb and jump on. There is a fire pit in the back yard. It is the guests responsibility to check for any burning restrictions. Any fines occurred for not following burn restrictions will be passed on to the guest for those violations. Contact Twain Harte Fire Department for current restrictions. Please be reminded to keep music at a courteous volume and follow quiet hour rules.
Linens:
Extra linens and towels are located in the hall closet.
BBQ:
There is a BBQ provided. BBQ is propane. If propane tank needs to be refilled, you can do so in town and exchange. Please send receipt to host and they will reimburse you for the refill of propane.
Cleaning supplies:
There are extra cleaning supplies under the kitchen sink and in the hall closet. Broom and vacuum are available. You are not required to clean in this manner but sometimes you like to tidy up during your stay.
Walking to town:
While only 0.3 miles to town, you may notice upon arriving that the road you take to the cabin isn't very walkable. But don't worry! When leaving the cabin, go up a few cabins and turn left on Tatu. Then make your next left on to Black Oak Dr. This easy hilly walk, with little to no traffic gets you right down town while avoiding the main road. Keep your eyes out, many times you see deer on this route.
Summer guests- Lake Access: Twain Harte Lake Access is available when booking between Memorial Day and Labor Day every year. NO off season renter access to the lake is allowed by the association. If your booking falls during Memorial and Labor Day, the host adds you to the roster for the lake. Upon arriving at the lake you will need your name and the address of the property. The lake association requires the host to pay a portion of your entry and the guest to pay the remainder at the gate. Visit THLake.org prior to your stay to review all the rules and regulations for the lake.
Winter Guests:
Cal-Trans requires all winter travelers in the mountains to carry chains even with 4WD and AWD. Occasionally chain control starts in Sonora during heavy winter storms.
The road leading to the house is maintained/plowed by the county. Due to the shape of our driveway snow plows cannot push the snow out of the driveway easily and requires manual removal. Luckily, the driveway is not much deeper than the length of your vehicle as you may be required to shovel snow in the driveway. We provide shovels (one electric assisted). With the exception of a few winter storms there is typically not a huge volume of snow in TH as the elevation is only 4000' but it can happen. The host does hire professional removal in extreme cases but in order to not pass the huge cost (many times more than the cost of the stay) on to the guest, we do not have routine snow removal.
Checking out:
We make this easy on you. Leave the linens on the bed, unmade, and wet towels hanging. Ple
ase take out trash and do not leave any dirty dishes in sink. That's it!
Quirks of the mountains:
We love the mountains for their beauty but that beauty comes with some downsides.
-Power Outages- Summer and winter both can have power outages. In summer, when risk of fire is high due to winds and summer storms, the power company can choose to turn the power off to prevent wild fires. And winter storms can also cause power outages as well. The host has a power outage safety kit available. In the event of ANY outage, please contact the host immediately so they can direct you to the power outage kit, review the information about restoration times and make sure the guest is safe. If power cannot be restored in a reasonable amount of time, the host can attempt to help guest relocate. Any days lost due to the power outage will be refunded to the guest. Cleaning fee is not refunded.
-Critters- Even with proper disposal and closing of trash can lids occasionally animals find themselves scavenging for a snack. Keeping trash contained can help but is not fool proof. Despite routine pest control you may still run into a few pests especially in the warmer seasons. We provide spray and traps as needed but recommend keeping inticing sweet treats in the fridge or sealed packaging so the pests don't get any ideas.
Communication:
-Please use app messages for basic communication. Any urgent situations please contact host via text/phone.
Have a great trip!
