Pets are allowed
We are pet friendly, but do ask that pets not be allowed on the furniture or beds for the comfort of other guests. Being surrounded by unused lots makes it a great place to walk dogs. Plus we are the last house on the street, so there is almost no traffic. For stays shorter than 6 days, we can discount the pet fee. Be sure to check the town of Edisto Beach for leash regulations that are seasonal.

The Chaika is a lovely house on a secluded lot at the end of a street with no other house adjacent and no thru traffic. Beautiful live oak in front gives a nice view out the glassed-in porch. Only a short 5-minute walk to the beach on a rarely-used sandy drive. 5-minute drive to St. Helena sound for calmer waters and great beach combing. Chaika means seagull in Russian - read the owner bio for info on why that name. A great house for families and friends to connect! And we are pet friendly. Please read the whole description below before booking as there are conditions that will impact your stay.

The house is secluded with undeveloped lots on either side and behind us. Being the last house on a no-outlet, sand covered street means very little traffic. The huge live oak tree in the front further makes you feel like you are away from things even though the beach is a short walk. The layout is conducive to 2 families with 2 bedrooms and a bath on each side separated by a large common area in the center.

The house has a glassed porch, front deck, and back porch - all areas to sit and relax, enjoying the area. It is on stilts, so there is additional space under the house for seating, grilling, cleaning up (private outdoor shower), and drying wet swimwear. We have a small charcoal grill under the house along with various beach toys. We love to hang hammocks between the supports.

Also note we have seasonal pricing, so until you put the dates in, the price shown is likely not accurate. The pricing is set up for shorter rentals of 3-7 days - please contact us before booking if interested in longer term as there might be further discount, especially in the off-season.

The city owns the lot next to our house. On occasion they use it to stage supplies, but usually there is very little activity on it and all we see there are the deer that come by most evenings. However, if they have a project going on, there can be equipment that is kept there or trucks coming to pick up supplies. Its not been a problem for anyone, but we like to be sure no one is surprised if a maintenance vehicle or some fencing appears in the undeveloped lot!

Please note, as is most common with Edisto properties, we do not provide sheets, pillowcases, and towels. You can see the bed sizes under room details and bring what you need. You also can rent what you need from Sarah who manages our property. Her contact information is on the contract we will send once the place is booked. Her pricing is very reasonable. The result is less than the difference it would be if we provided them for all the beds each rental.

Meet The Host

Owner
James
Jim and Shawn have been visiting Edisto Island for 40 years. They purchased "Chaika" in the mid 90s for an investment when they sold their home in Kentucky and moved with their four children to live and serve in northern Kazakhstan. Upon returning to the U.S. they decided to hang onto the home and enjoy helping families and groups of friends have an affordable beach vacation and build memories together. "Chaika" is named after an old hotel in the city where they lived - it means "Seagull" in the Russian language.

Getting around

It is about a 300 yard, 7-minute walk to the beach front from our house. If you drive, you have to go to the next beach access either direction where there is car parking. Our access point only allows parking for bicycles and golf carts. The housing part of the beach front is only about 3 miles long, so nothing is very far off. You can drive places with ample parking at most beach access points, but an easy walk from our house to the closest ones. Biking is also great here - there are a couple local places that offer bike rentals.

Check In: 4PM - 11PM
During peak season, the 4pm check-in and 11am check out are standard in order to give the cleaners time to get to all the properties they handle. There are situations where we can be flexible with that, but do not assume it until we have been in touch with each other. After booking I will send a link that gives info on key pickup and other information on the house. We use self-check-in with a coded lock

House Rules
We are pet friendly, but guests need to inform of plans to bring pets upon the first inquiry. We add $200/week as a pet fee to help with the costs of additional wear and tear for welcoming our furry friends. Airbnb and taxes will add their percentages to that. 50 lb maximum. We also ask that they be restricted to the common areas, so future guests will not have allergy issues in the bedrooms. If renting fewer than 5 days, we might reduce the $200.

LONGER TERM RENTALS: It is hard within the system to put in rates for both short and long term, especially for seasonal rentals. If interested in longer than a week, please contact me - the price shown may be higher or lower than what we can offer. In general, we have room to work in the off-season. In the summer (June-August), longer rentals will be the sum of the individual weeks.

No events/parties without prior approval. No smoking policy is absolute - all forms of smoking, including on the porches.

Once we have confirmed your booking, we will send you a document that gives more information on the house, including a helpful guide for your stay as well as an inventory of what you will find in the house.

Upon arrival, please make note of the guest manual on the kitchen counter. It includes instructions for appliances, information about water, internet access codes, and other useful information to make your stay more enjoyable and safe.
