Welcome to Miss Ruby’s Mid-City, in a safe, quiet residential neighborhood just steps from a streetcar line, in the heart of New Orleans. It’s a short streetcar ride to the French Quarter or Audubon Zoo and walking distance to dozens of restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores and pharmacies, and night spots. Let us host you in our newly renovated 100+ year-old home, featuring original millwork, 14-foot ceilings, 2 parlors, pocket doors, and an open living space. Perfect for rest or play!

Miss Rubys is a three-bay shotgun house typical of the local design. My wife, Kristin, and I acquired and renovated our house into its current sidehall shotgun layout. Then, a random conversation with one of the neighbors told us about Miss Ruby, who had operated Miss Rubys Mid-City Bed-and-Breakfast decades ago in our house, so Kristin and I adopted this name for the house as our own.

We renovated it top to bottom, reusing the original architectural antiques as we modernized the floor plan, closing some doorways and opening walls. We retained the original living and dining room parlors, still separated by the original pocket doors. We kept the original heart pine hardwood floors, 14-foot ceilings, and the floor-to-ceiling windows that give the casual living areas a light, airy feel. We built an addition within which to create the sidehall, a spacious new bathroom, and a laundry room. We kept the bedroom paneling and reused the original French doors, transoms, casings and other millwork, so that Miss Rubys retains its original architectural charm.

After our renovation, Miss Rubys now has the expected modern conveniences, including central air and heat, high-speed internet, WiFi, big-screen television, and other amenities.

Although you will be providing for many of your needs during your stay, we offer the essentials for items that you might forget or need before you can get to the store. If you need or want something during your stay, please let us know. We want your stay to be easy and comfortable.

Getting around

Mid-City is centrally located, in the heart of New Orleans, a short walk or drive to anywhere in New Orleans. We offer free off-street parking in the driveway for 2 to 3 cars, one behind the other, as well as free on-street parking. From Miss Ruby's, it's a 5-minute drive to two Interstates, I-10 and I-610, and a quick drive to anywhere else. Once you're here, Miss Ruby's is mere steps from the Canal Street streetcar line, which in one direction is a 15-minute ride to City Park. City Park includes a public golf course, the New Orleans Museum of Art, Sculpture Garden, and peddle-boats and bicycles for rent at Big Lake. A 15-minute streetcar ride in the other direction will take you to the French Quarter, the Aquarium of the Americas, and the downtown New Orleans riverfront. There, a transfer to the historic St. Charles Avenue streetcar line will take you to the Garden District, Tulane and Loyola Universities, Audubon Park, and the rest of Uptown New Orleans. In addition to streetcar lines, Miss Ruby's and the rest of New Orleans are well-served by Lyft, Uber, and public buses. Public bus and streetcar fares are $1.25. Exact change is required. When paying the fare, you may pay a small additional amount (normally $0.25, but currently waived) for a transfer to connecting transit lines. You can also download the RTA GoMobile app and pay your fare instantly from your phone. One–, three-, and 31-day unlimited ride “Jazzy Passes” are also available for $3, $9, and $55 respectively.
