Did I say luxurious? I’ve stayed in over 100 Airbnbs, our beds are better than 97% of my own stays. You’ll find a flight amenity kit from one of our First Class trips on Delta/SkyTeam in the bedrooms, and the brand of earplugs and sleep masks I use in First available. Why pay for someplace else and risk a poor night’s sleep?
Downtown Chicago (South Loop / Magnificent Mile) is 10-25 minutes via car/Uber/Lyft (depending on traffic), plentiful public transit is nearby. Read on for more detailed info.
In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, we regularly sanitized & disinfected the property. Some urfaces have been sprayed with soap and water and left to dry for soap’s disinfectant effect. Windows and surfaces may be cloudy and spotted rather than clear, in order to preserve sanitation.
We purchased just under 2 years ago and have been slowly restoring this house to its early 20th century appearance -- a bit of a labour of love, a bit of an educational project. Rather than a renovation, we are slowly peeling off layers of past changes to reveal and restore original hardwoods and other features. Our intent is to provide the experience of the 1920s or 1930s combined with necessary current amenities (WiFi, high-power USB plugs, refrigeration!).
Moving boxes are mostly long gone, and we listed after much work, but there is still much to be done. Please see photos to get an idea of current condition. Original hardwood floors were covered with layers of latex paint which proved time-consuming to remove; it is currently mostly gone, but upstairs floors are unsealed and still have paint seeped in, still in the process of removal. We are restoring edging and trim and masking tape remains in many places.
Generally we try to keep any restoration messes to a minimum and out of your way-- but if you have time & interest, we can provide 30-90 minutes of things like training in paint removal with infrared and other technology (“your personal episode of ‘This Old House’), and plan to offer short tours of the House as an Airbnb Experience.
The House is also part of a larger educational project, described below.
If you have limited or are charged for cellular data, we can provide a temporary password for Comcast / xfinitywifi public Wifi points in Chicago if you ask in advance.
There is video security covering outdoor and some public indoor areas.
We are in a relatively quiet, renewing/improving, familyish neighborhood-- we are sometimes up late, usually to get work projects completed! and attempt to be respectful of your schedule and need for quiet / rest / privacy.
The West Woodlawn section of Hyde Park is the focus of several urban renewal projects, concurrent with the Obama Presidential Library just to the east. Sunshine Enterprises and Greenline Coffee, at the corner of 61st and Eberhardt, have been centers of those efforts-- the block we are on, the first of a model now expanding to twelve surrounding blocks.
The Lorraine Hansberry House, featured in the play “A Raisin in the Sun” (and the Supreme Court case) is centered, is just across and down the street.
Finally, the House is the first of The Dikē Project. Along with the Arete Project and Thoreau College, we seek to use experiential education based on the Deep Springs College model to provide alternative college experiences, as well as service opportunities that improve the local community. In addition to local staffing, 5% of gains are reinvested in Deep Springs and local nonprofits.

Policies and Rules
.☛ Behave well, treat the place as your own. GOLDEN RULE: leave things *as you found them* and *where you found them.*
.☛ Generally clean up after yourself as you can; dishes should be done soon or placed in dishwasher if available; we realize short-term guests, people heading for flights etc may be on tight schedules and we'll take care of things, but for stays more than 4 days, please take out the trash occasionally / clean up after yourself.
.☛ We usually consider 11pm-10am or so to be quiet-ish hours-- we may be working late on a project, we may get up very early, we may be up after noon. We'll be very aware and respectful of noise during these times, and hope you will be as well. (Let us know if you have specific plans that require adjustment; this is of less importance if no one but you is in the house).
.☛ No drama, keep it cool and reasonable and we will as well.
.☛ You may only use as many bedrooms as the number of people booked.
.☛ Please let us know ASAP about anticipated arrival and departure times / if you potentially need early check-in or late check-out or luggage drop-off/storage. Check-in time is normally 2:30pm, check-out, 11am; we are as flexible as we can be.
.☛ We need to know full names of all guests. Only declared guests may enter the premises unless otherwise authorized; if you want to bring someone else on the property, please just request in advance. (Sorry: Airbnb rules / liability / security for everyone require this).
.☛ For your security and ours, we have installed video security monitoring devices to monitor exterior and interior areas outside your unit: entry access points, the entry foyer & stairwells, basement (mostly floor drains) as well as areas not open to guests (storage rooms). (No cameras are capable of recording inside your space/unit exception: there is one on the pantry floor monitoring plumbing). Tampering with or disabling security devices is grounds for immediate cancellation of your stay without refund.
.☛ If you place perishable items in trash indoors, please make sure they are removed before rotting, if necessary; otherwise get them to the back porch containers or outside bins (ideally, the alleyway, especially in summer).
.☛.☛ "THE FINE PRINT" stuff that I *really* wish we didn't have to add: (each is added here because of incidents):
Do not store or leave open food in unit (use refrigerators!).
Do not change things outside your bedroom(s), "take care of things" or “make things better” without asking and receiving explicit permission (see GOLDEN RULE).
No smoking inside or on front porch. Smoking in back yard away from building only.
DO NOT go into other guests’ units/rooms without explicit permission except in a true emergency (this applies if door is unlocked or open).
During quiet hours especially, please be aware of noise and do not slam doors, cabinets, stomp around, or make the kind of noise likely to wake someone wearing earplugs. (Few people have done this, but we have professional lives and obligations, which are sometimes very demanding, as do many guests-- everyone wants and needs good rest!).
FEES:
Airbed & linens, $35
$50/day/person fee for unauthorized overnight guests. $50/day use of extra bedroom beyond # persons booked. $175 unauthorized pet fee.
$100 locking fee if building left unlocked / unsecure.
Smoking violation $375
$150 lost physical key / rekeying fee (we are normally keyless entry)
$100/day overcapacity fee if more guests than maximum listed sleep overnight.
$25/hr unauthorized late check-out (minimum). $50 for check-in before 11am. (Late/early checkins/outs should be requested >24h in advance)
1 1/2 hours of cleaning by two people is included. If more cleaning is needed, it will be billed at our cleaners’ rate of $90/hr
$500 fee if you enter other unit/listing in building without permission
Thanks.
