COMMUNITY
This is a lovely, quiet neighborhood where many residents call this home. Walking and bicycles are very popular ways to get around in the community. Often you will have the beach nearly to yourself. But there are many attractions nearby, both historical, cultural and just plain fun. And five places for ice cream!
Most people find little reason to drive once they arrive. But parking is available in the covered carport at the front of the condo, and in the parking area. A parking pass will be emailed to you before arrival that you should place in your front window - there is no public parking in the community. Golf carts are very popular, but they must be equipped for the street to drive outside the community. Drivers must be licensed drivers. Bicycles are also very popular, and there are two rental shops nearby.
There is also a ferry to Fort Fisher, home of the NC Aquarium and the Fort Fisher historical site. There is another ferry to Bald Head Island, fun for a day visit. Southport is only 15 minutes away, Wilmington is 23 miles and Myrtle Beach is about 60 miles away. Also fun for a day trip.
Heron's Rest at Caswell Beach is an excellent location for local outings. Golf, fishing and other water sports are popular, with over 40 golf courses within a short drive.
Southport on the Cape Fear River is a 15 minute drive, featuring unique shopping, bakeries, ice cream, the Maritime Museum, boat tours and waterfront dining. It is also the port for the ferries to Bald Head Island (no cars) and Ft. Fisher, home of one of the North Carolina Aquariums, and the Fort Fisher Historical Museum.
Carolina Beach, featuring the town, the beach and the Carolina Beach State Park can be reached either by the Ft. Fisher Ferry or from Wilmington. Myrtle Beach is about 75 minutes away, and Wilmington can be reached by car in about 45 minutes.
Brunswick County is also home to several indigenous carnivorous plants - one of the very few places in the world with this distinction. Species include several species of pitcher plants, venus fly traps, and sun dews. A treasure to see in the wild.
The area has many historical sites. The mouth of the Cape Fear River was home to many pirates because of the dangerous shoals at the mouth to the river. Nearby Brunswick Town on the Cape Fear, settled in the early 1700's, was the main colonial port for shipment of tar and pitch to England for the Royal Navy. Colonists staged an early tax rebellion, years before the Boston Tea Party.
If more family or friends want to stay nearby each other, see the Sea Hive unit in the same complex. Same owner/host as Heron's Rest.
