House Conveniences - Blue Sails

If questions arise during your vacation, you might find the answer in this Lake Anna Blue Sails home guide.

Linens

Kitchen and bed/bath linens and towels are provided. Beds are made up with comforters and pillows.

Each full bathroom is stocked with bath mats and ample sets of bath towels, hand towels, and wash cloths. The half bath and kitchen are supplied with towels and a dish sponge.

Sets of sheets are placed on each of the beds. Sofa bed sheets are in the wardrobe in the adjacent bedroom. You should plan to make up the beds before sleeping in them. Do not sleep on mattress pads, uncased pillows, blankets, or comforters.

Blankets are located in the bedroom closets.

No need to wash soiled linens. Review check-out instructions for proper disposition of dirty laundry.

You might want to bring beach towels for your water and boat use.

Old towels and sheets are located over the washer. You may use these for your pets.

Kitchen

The fully stocked kitchen offers everything you need to cook, visit, dine, and enjoy your vacation, including:

Glasses, dishes, coffee mugs, silverware
Pots, pans and cooking utensils
Flexbrew coffee maker with both pot drip brew and single K-cup functionality
Toaster
Microwave
Blender
Crock pot

There are usually some items in the cabinets that guests have left behind, including salt and pepper and a few other spices, sugar and sugar substitute, dry creamer, condiment packages, dishwasher pods/soap, dish detergent, napkins. Please help yourself to all.

Lake Anna Blue Sails is on a septic, and the kitchen disposal is not to be used. Plan to capture your food waste and throw it in the trash. Respect the septic.

Second Kitchen

You'll discover a small kitchen on the lower level with a sink, refrigerator, stove, drip coffeepot, and microwave.

Please return the dishes and silver to this kitchen after washing.

Indoor Fireplace

The propane fireplace in the living room is so user-friendly. Note the switches on the wall to the left of the fireplace for Fire and Blower. Just flip one or both for instant ambiance.

Do not adjust the controls below the grate or flip the switch on the right of the fireplace surround.

Turn the fireplace off when sleeping or when you leave the house, for safety reasons.

The garage is not provided for guest parking.

If anyone in your party could use a walker, bedside commode, or shower stool, let Kate know. She might be able to furnish them.

WIFI & TV

The Internet network is Spinnaker and the password is BlueSail. The password can be found on the router. Do not reset the router.

Lake Anna Blue Sails boasts Comcast Xfinity, the best service available at Lake Anna. It's only available in a few areas. Data is unlimited. As many as six past guests have simultaneously worked on-line at Blue Sails with great satisfaction.

There are two TVs - one in the main level living room and the other in the lower level media room.

The main level living room has a Roku TV with Xfinity service. Use the Xfinity remote for channels and apps. For apps, press "Xfinity" on the remote and arrow over to the apps. To reach Roku programming, press the house icon on the Roku remote.

The media room TV has an Xfinity and Vizio remote. You should be able to access all programming from the Xfinity remote.

Hot Water

Lake Anna Blue Sails has an unlimited supply of hot water. It might take a while to move hot water to the kitchen/master side of the house. My trick? Run the hot water tap at the master bath soaking tub full-blast for about 25 seconds to "prime the pump." After that, you'll enjoy lovely, hot water on that side of the house until the water cools again.

Several people showering at once? No problem. This home can keep up with everybody.

Heating and Cooling

Main/Lower Level - There are two thermostats on the main level. Each thermostat controls the temperature in half the home's main and lower level. If the lower level is too chilly, close the dampers on that level. If you're chilly during the cooler months, make sure the lower level dampers are open.

Penthouse Level (top floor) - The penthouse AC can be quite warm during summer. We recommend that you keep blinds shut during the day and the door at the top of the stairs closed since hot air rises. A portable AC unit is provided for your sleeping comfort - don't leave it on when the room is unoccupied. Just turn it on a half hour or so prior to bedtime, and the room will cool down to a comfortable sleeping temperature.

Don't be tempted to try to cool the Penthouse with the main thermostat - you risk freezing it up and having NO COOL AIR. So keep the thermostat at 76 degrees or above, and use the portable AC unit when you're in the room.

During cooler weather, leave the door to the penthouse open. That same hot air rising will help keep the bedroom toasty.

Deck

Two decks and one porch provide guests with casual outside space.

The top deck can be accessed from the breakfast area, living room, and master bedroom. It has:

Grill and propane (extra propane tank located in the garage)
Screened-in dining area
Dining table and chairs
Deck chairs

The lower deck has deck chairs.

The front porch has a porch swing.

All these spaces are smoking zones. Keep doors and windows shut if you are smoking in any of these areas. Police up your smoking debris and dispose of safely.

There is no smoking or vaping inside Lake Anna Blue Sails.

Laundry

A washer and dryer are provide for your use.

There is often some laundry detergent in case you need to wash and dry your items. Don’t worry about washing linens provided for your use – that’s our treat to you.

Septic

Treat the septic system gently by only flushing or draining natural waste and toilet paper.
Do not use the kitchen sink garbage disposal - only water and soap go down the drain.
Never drive on the grass.

Trash

Bag all trash. Please be kind – your Blue Sails Trash Lady can’t lift heavy bags, so keep the weight down.

There are four large trash cans and one medium one in the garage. The cans will be empty when you arrive.

There is a trash can at the dock which must be emptied into the garage cans at checkout.

Leave your trash at checkout, and we’ll take care of it.

We don’t ask guests to recycle because regional rules differ, and there’s not “one size fits all.”

Fire Pit

Enjoy fires in the fire pit, but BE SAFE.

Thoroughly extinguish the fire after each use.
Firewood is not provided. If past guests left a log or two, help yourself.
You're welcome to pick up fallen sticks to feed the fire.
You might want to bring loppers or an axe.
Be sure to contain all combustible material in the pit.
Some of the area convenience stores sell wood.

Dock

Lake Anna Blue Sails has two covered boat slips and a covered jet ski slip. Don't raise your watercraft on the lift. Do not run the lift down to the lake bottom. Do not allow anyone to climb on the lifts.

The dock has a dining table, picnic table, and chairs. There's also a room that provides a private changing area. The dock refrigerator is provided for guests' convenience - be sure to empty and wipe it clean after your use.

Do not allow anyone to dive off the dock or climb on the dock roof.

Lake Anna Blue Sails does not have a boat launch. Plan to use a local marina, such as Hunters Landing at The Cove which is about 10 minutes away at 6320 Belmont Road, Mineral, VA 23117, (540) 854-5756.

Enjoy the three kayaks that can be found in the garage. Life jackets are provided for your safety.

Blue Skies at Lake Anna is on the public side of Lake Anna.

Pets

Dogs are the only pets permitted at Lake Anna Blue Sails. Dogs must be approved in advance. The pet fee is charged per dog stay with a maximum of three approved dogs.

Police up your dog's poop immediately in plastic bags and dispose of the bag in the garbage cans in the garage.

Be sure to keep your dog on leash on Blue Sails property and in the surrounding neighborhood.

Crate your dog if left unattended inside the property.

Dogs are not allowed on the furniture.

Old sheets and towels are provided for use with your dog. Do not use the human linens for your dog.

County Noise Ordinance

Lake Anna Blue Sails has wonderful neighbors, including one who is quite sensitive to late night noise. We want our neighbors to love you, our guests, and count on you to be considerate of them.

Spotsylvania County has a noise ordinance, Article II, § 14.50-57, that restricts noise to:

Daytime, 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM - 65 maximum dBA
Nighttime, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM - 60 maximum dBA

Thanks for playing your music at a very low volume anywhere outside after 10:00 PM. Conversation and laughter carry over the water, so be mindful of that as well.

If a neighbor complains, Kate will text the booking guest once with a heads up.

If a Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office deputy responds to a noise complaint, please call or text Kate at (540) 907-2353.

Safety First

We hope you enjoy your vacation at Blue Sails and Lake Anna.

The following "Don'ts" are reminders for you and your guests' safety.

NO FIREWORKS. Any violation will result in a $100 charge.
Swim at your own risk.
Jumping - Do not jump off the dock or the boathouse roof.
Firearms - Do not allow anyone to fire any kind of firearm, including BB guns, on or around the property.
Supervise children at all times. Water, fires, and other home features are such fun, but accidents can happen.
