About this place

Crooked Mile Cottage – Family-Friendly Historic Holiday House in Hokitika. Across from the beach, sleeps up to 8, walking distance to cafés etc.

You won’t find a better-located holiday house in Hokitika – right in the historic heart, just 1 minute to the beach and river, 2 minutes’ walk to shops, restaurants, bars and theater. This character-packed cottage is full of old-world charm and retro vibes. It’s not fancy or new, but it’s cozy, welcoming, and full of personality. With space to sleep up to 8, it’s ideal for families or groups wanting something different from a hotel. Come enjoy this classic Kiwi cottage.

Crooked Mile Cottage is over 100 years old — and proud of it. Guests call it “charming,” “quirky,” and “a real Kiwi bach experience.” If you’re looking for sleek finishes or the feel of a new build, this won’t be the right fit. But if you love old homes with character, cosy corners, and if you stay in winter - a log fire to sit by, you’ll feel right at home here.

LOCATION: The cottage sits in the historic heart of Hokitika — just one minute from the beach, two minutes to the river and Sunset Point, and a short stroll to cafés, shops, and restaurants. Many guests say they hardly used their car because everything they needed was walkable.

INTERIOR: Inside, the spaces are compact but thoughtfully set up. The kitchen is small but well-equipped, with past guests often commenting that “everything I needed was just there.” The house sleeps up to eight, but keep in mind there is only one bathroom and a dining table that seats four plus stools.

Families appreciate the fenced yard, books, toys, and extras like a picnic basket and beach gear. Beds are comfortable, with quality linen and some electric blankets. Pets are sometimes welcome by prior arrangement.

WINTER MONTHS: Log fire ready to light, with heaters and blankets for chilly nights

This is a home for people who prefer personality over perfection. Expect quirks, creaks, and a bit of patina along with warmth, comfort, and plenty of charm. If “quirky” is a compliment in your book, Crooked Mile Cottage will make a memorable base for your West Coast stay.

WINTER HEATING: Woodburner, electric heaters in bedrooms, some beds have electric blankets also.

BIKE STORAGE: You can put your bikes in the wood shed in the backyard or lock them on the front porch.

SECURITY: There is a Ring security door bell camera on the front and back door to monitor the pathway and entrances while the house is empty.
Make sure all guests including babies are included in your booking reservation. If there is a fire or emergency we must know exactly how many people are in the house.

CLEANING: No cleaning fees are charged for your stay and we will handle the cleaning and preparation of the house for your arrival. We kindly request that you leave the house in a clean and orderly condition upon your departure. Failure to do so may result in additional fees. Thank you.

HELP US BE SUSTAINABLE: Follow our recycling guide. Don't buy bottled water - you can drink the tap water. Turn off lights/heating/appliances when not in use.

As part of our efforts to be more eco-friendly, we have implemented a policy of only making up the beds that are required based on the number of guests booked.

By doing so, we aim to minimize water and energy consumption associated with laundry, reduce the use of cleaning products, and ultimately reduce waste. We believe that these small steps can contribute to a more sustainable future for our planet.

SUPPLIES: We provide a starter supply of toilet paper etc. For longer stays, you will need to top up from the local supermarket.

PETS: We sometimes allow a dog. Please discuss this with us when you request to stay. Permission is needed at the time of booking.

BEFORE YOU BOOK: Make sure you note our house rules and read the full description. Let us know which beds you require.

We offer a friendly and warm space that is quite different from a hotel experience. We want guests to feel comfortable and at home in the spaces we have set up. Our listings really appeal to folks who love character homes, enjoy art on the walls and vintage/retro furniture.

We have both traveled extensively.
We absolutely love living here in Hokitika. It has a wonderful community - we are a really eclectic bunch. The scenery is wild and stunning and the history is fascinating.
I'm busy running our farm as well as working. We look forward to meeting our guests and are always happy to help you plan activities here on the West Coast - rain or shine - it is a fantastic place to be.
