The Hermitage Estate in William's Town, Little Exuma, is a 970-acre cotton plantation, on the grounds of which stands the Cotton House, the oldest building in The Exuma’s. It was originally built in the 1750s by loyalists fleeing America.
The remains that are left are more than likely the main house, cook house and slave quarters.
The cotton industry thrived on the island for many years.
There are said to be tombs on the property, which is very overgrown. Although, trying to help with this issue, the grounds are now grazed by the town goats.
It’s great to be able to mix a bit of history into your beach days!
