My Sis and I decided to hire a driver/guide and make a day of it! I really don't have any regrets to taking this much on in one day. We didn't get to spend much time at Coba, but the pyramid is the real star of that site and that's all I had capacity for at that point. A person can only take so much. We started at Ek Balam and took the most pictures there.
We arrived at Ek Balam and found that we were the only people there. The carvings are amazing! I recommend you see this site.
Here's my little Sis on the pyramid at Ek Balam. Not nearly as big as Coba or Chichen Itza but much more elaborate.
Then on to Chichen Itza. The Castillo is what everyone wants to see. If you travel to the area in March or September(and there is sun) you will see the serpent climb down the pyramid. Truly an ancient architectural marvel. No wonder this is one of the seven wonders of the world! We were there in January, so no serpent show, but the site is impressive nonetheless.
The observatory
And last, but not least, Coba. You can climb this pyramid but I didn't have the energy to tackle that. Doesn't it look a little "crumbly?" And the steps are very narrow.
I've been to Teotihuacan, just outside of Mexico city, and climbed the Pyramid of the Sun. And to Uxmal and climbed the pyramid there (not the Magicians temple, they don't allow that) and the steps are so close together, you have to step sideways. Or maybe I just have big feet, but coming down is really scary.
All in all a really fun trip. So nice to be back at the condo for a quick jump in the pool and relax on the beach!
